HOW CLEAN IS SWEDEN'S WATER?

A living underwater ecosystem is not a matter of course today. Massive discharges from industry and wastewater treatment plants to the Swedish catchment areas are ongoing around the clock.
The ecosystem is slowly dying and we and our drinking water can be poisoned.

We have been told - we have great water here in Sweden!

Furthermore, maybe - here in Sweden we can drink the tap water without any problems, unlike when we travel abroad, where it is so much worse.

The question is whether we trust our municipalities and treatment plants a little too much and that the right information does not reach us?
What do we really know about what it looks like in our water sources that provide us with our tap water?
What does our tap and shower water contain?

DID YOU KNOW?
Today, there are no legal requirements in Sweden for the control of chemicals and harmful substances in our drinking water.
Controls are only available for pathogens, i.e. viruses and bacteria, to avoid the possibility of acute gastroenteritis, etc. However, the municipalities take some tests every month for about 30-50 different substances. Often also a full-spectrum test once a year that measures about 300 different substances.

The problem is that we have up to 100,000 different chemicals today in our lakes and water sources, which thus end up in our drinking water. As a result, we have a very limited understanding of what it is we actually drink and burden our bodies with.

When we shop for food, I think many people today like to turn around and read the list of ingredients. If this has an overly long list and many strange names, we are happy to refrain from the product - conscious as we are today.
Imagine that a glass of water can have up to 100,000 ingredients! And the vast majority with strange names, which we are not supposed to understand.

We consciously choose not to eat foods with toxins and pollutants, so why should we drink toxic water daily?

More and more "whistleblowers" in water authorities, sewage treatment plants, municipalities, etc. are flagging these acute problems, but still nothing is being done about it at all.
It would cost too much and the priority is on other things.
So we need to take that responsibility ourselves.

"We don't have a clue about the content of our TAP WATER, we think it's good - we do have, it is said, certain standards that are measured - but there is so much we don't know"
Ingegerd Rosborg, PhD, KTH Royal Institute of Technology

water pipes

Our Swedish water pipes are extremely neglected and a report released recently shows that the rate of the country's replacement of water pipes would need to be more than fivefold and yet it would take over 100 years to replace them all. Chemicals are continuously added to the water, not for the sake of our health, but so that the pipes do not break and so that we do not notice differences in taste no matter how much contaminants come through through the water.

"If people knew how bad the water pipes are in Sweden, they would never drink the water."

Kenneth Petterson, Älmhults tidigare VA-chef i Älmhult

Pharmaceutical residues
With more and more people taking different medications on a daily basis, a lot of residues of these drugs naturally end up in our water. Among other things

  • Antidepressants, psychotropic drugs of various kinds

  • Hormones, e.g. birth control pills

  • Powerful pain relievers and vaccines

  • Drug residues, etc.

Our water treatment plants are not designed to handle these pharmaceutical residues, but about 90% are carried out into our tap water. In December 2022, studies showed that 25% of our Swedish tap water has such high levels of pharmaceutical residues that it is classified as "ecological risk" as well as "risk to human health" - not to mention the risks to our animals' health who consume even more water daily than humans.

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has now started a test in Strömsund where they see that about 1 kg of pharmaceutical residues are released into the drinking water every day. Depending on the outcome, it will then be investigated what the next steps are. Unfortunately, it will take many years before this method is implemented.

Although the levels of these toxins may seem low, we ingest such large amounts of water every day that it accumulates in our bodies and deeply disrupts our health and causes disease.

PFAS

What is PFAS?

What about PFAS do you need to know for the sake of your health - how does it affect our humans as a poison?

PFAS are the PCBs and DDT of our time, a group of over 4,700 chemicals called highly fluorinated "forever chemicals". Large parts of our surface water, groundwater and drinking water are contaminated by the substances and the discharges are in full swing. PFAS are more spring-degradable than PCBs and DDT and so harmful to health that it has been shown to increase the risk of e.g. cancer, liver damage, impaired reproductive ability, elevated blood lipids and much more.

PFAS are found in, for example:

  • Fire Extinguishing Foams

  • Teflon coatings on e.g. frying pans, smartphones, building materials, dental restorative materials

  • Sealing compound, e.g. Rhoca Gil which was used to eat Hallandsåsen which led to major damage

  • Water-repellent treatments of e.g. textiles and shoes and much more.

Many organizations are trying to ban the use of these toxic chemicals, but progress is very slow and only a few have been banned so far. PFAS are not currently removed in our water treatment plants, but continue to circulate in our water, so we ingest PFAS in quantities through our drinking water.

the water in our major cities

We believe that we all deserve information and knowledge about the health risks we face on a daily basis: risks that are often ignored or hidden. The only way to ensure that the tap water you use and the drinking water you consume is healthy and free of chemicals and environmental toxins is to filter it in your home.
We are proud to be able to offer the opportunity to purify your water in the tap.

DRUG RESIDUES AFFECT HUMAN CELLS

2009-02-27

Swedish watercourses contain residues of a large number of pharmaceuticals, but we still know too little about how they affect us and other living organisms. Now, for the first time, a research group at Örebro University has shown that even the very small concentrations found in Swedish waters affect human cells.

ON CHLORINATION OF DRINKING WATER

As early as 1989, it was written about the harmful effects of chlorine in the information brochure Vattenbladet. They say, for example, that heart attacks were very rare before chlorine began to be used to disinfect drinking water.

The Swedish National Food Agency has previously repeatedly answered the question of why Swedish tap water is chlorinated - now all such articles have been removed!
